The permafrost — permanently frozen ground — prevents the Arctic wolf from digging a den, so… they typically live in rocky outcrops or caves. During the winter it grows a second layer of fur for protection against the harsh conditions. Wolves generally pair for life, and usually only the alpha male and female of a pack mate. Each year the female gives birth to two or three pups. Wolf fathers are very attentive to and protective of their mates and pups.
