Well-adapted to the frigid climate in their Arctic habitat, musk oxen have outer hairs, or guard hairs, that cover a shorter undercoat for insulation in winter that falls out when temperatures rise. When threatened by predators like wolves and bears, musk oxen stand together in a protective circle, with calves inside and adults’ horns facing outward.
