Elephants are the largest land animals walking the Earth. Two genetically different African species exist: the savanna elephant and the forest elephant. African elephants live in a matriarchal society, so a new mom is not alone in guiding her young. Other females in the social group help a calf to its feet after birth and show the baby how to nurse. Females remain with their birth group for life, sharing responsibility for calves; males leave the herd once they reach maturity.
