The mating season for American black bears peaks in May and June, but the fertilized embryo doesn’t implant in the uterus until fall when the female enters the den. This delayed implantation allows the female bear’s body to physiologically “assess” her condition and not waste fat reserves and energy in sustaining a pregnancy.
